Mioplosus Fossil Fish

One of the more uncommon fish coming out of the Green River Formation is the perciform Mioplosus . This fish could grow to lengths of up to 20 inches, but averaged about 5 to 7 inches. They were believed to be successful predators in the northern hemisphere’s freshwater environments during the Eocene epoch. Large adult Mioplosus specimens are often pulled from the 18-inch layer of the Green River formation, which is characterized by exquisite and highly detailed brown-black preservation on a light cream limestone. These specimens make a phenomenal display piece, especially when fossilized with a mid-dinner mouthful!
