Picture Standstone

Toroweap sandstone, carved into stunning works of art, is sourced from a claim near Snowflake, Arizona. This unique stone comes from the lower member of the Toroweap Formation, a significant geological layer in the upper Grand Canyon sequence. The sandstone’s striking natural patterns and vibrant bands are the result of iron oxide-rich groundwater permeating the rock over time. These colors can become even more brilliant when exposed to intense heat. This fascinating property was discovered by a geologist who noticed a particularly bright piece of sandstone partially buried in the ground. After determining that the brighter hues were caused by chemical changes from extreme heat, possibly due to a forest fire, the geologist experimented with “baking” the rock at 500°F. This process successfully enhanced the colors, replicating the natural phenomenon.
